The other day, I was playing Phantasy Star 1, stocking up on burgers in the "First Food Shop."
My brother then walked by and looked at the screen, eventually commenting how the store was ridiculous, since it looked like it has nothing to do with food. (Since there's potion bottles and glass drawers on the counter.)

This got me wondering.
Were the healing items always burgers and cola in the original Japanese version?
If not, what were they originally, and why did they change the names?
If they were always burgers and cola, WHY?

Is that the only kind of food they have on three whole planets?!

Looking up Camineet.net, I found that "Burger" and "Cola" were actually "Perolymate" and "Ruoginin". They even have pictures of the items!

I can think of this reason about the change: an attempt to make the game appeal to US gamers.

There were also perolymates in PS4 and PSU. It makes sense, because in PS4 they say that perolymate is a traditional snack.
