PSIV - Japanese

Postby skymandr » Thu Nov 29, 2007 8:31 pm

Just got it today! Cost me less than $10, and that's including postage! ^^
Looks to be in good condition, and the foldout map of Mota is sweet. Only drawback is that I don't own a Japanese Mega Drive...
Has anyone seen a highres version of the map online? If not I'll scan it and send it to mr. M. I'll also have a quick look at the techlist at the back of the map and see if there are any surprises. If so, you'll be the first to know!

Yes. I was surprised to find such a gem there, and even more surprised to win it with such a shamefully low offer... ^

There is a store in Tokyo probably every gamer who have been overthere know which is only about old school game and retro gaming.

If you have the opportunity to go in Japan, you'll even be able to buy Phantasy Star I on megadrive for aproximately 10 dollars.

And for the quality, every second hand game or system I've seen in Japan were almost worthy of a brand new game in Europe.

Anyway, that's a good thing you could buy PSIV in japanese, have fun.

Nice find, skymandr!

Some names are different, for example Alys is called Lyla, Chaz is Rudy, the technique Wat is Barta, Tsu is Grants... Many other names are different, too. But aside from name-changes I personally don't know what else is different, but someone else probably does.

Well, if you understand japanese, you'll understand how fun is Raja.

He always has a pun and all of those can't be translated in english.
Plus when he first meet with the group, he refers to Rune/Slay as a midget (and that's why Rune gets irritated) but not in the english Version.

Well there are all those sort of things that makes Rune more arrogant when reading his japanese lines.

It's fun to see. (Moreover, it's fun if you learn japanese as, it's easy to understand... in a way)

On a related subject, now that we're discussing regional differences...
Has there ever been any attempt at a retranslation project for PSIV, sorta like Naflign's Ego did with PSII?

According to the Compendium the JP version of PSIV should actually be *missing* some art in-game that only the US version had.

Speaking of the PSII retranslation, did anyone actually save the text version of that anywhere? I have the ROM, but that's not exactly a convenient thing if I want to consult the script for whatever random thing I'm trying to look up.

There's something I've been wondering about. You know how the timeline in the Compendium states that in place of the struggle between The Great Light and The Profound Darkness was a war between some spiritual beings, meaning that there was no Great Light at all and The profound Darkness was formed after the losing side was banished into that other dimension.

Despite this the developers actually mention The Great Light in an interview elsewhere in that same Compendium. So is what Le Roof says in the japanese PSIV in line with the timeline or was that whole thing just retconned afterwards?

Indeed, that's weird. What makes it even weirder is that that's not the only place the Great Light is referenced. It even has its own entry:

The Great Light (IV)
A spirit-life form that, after a battle to the death in a star system in a massive nebula long ago, created the Algol Solar System and sealed away the Profound Darkness. The Great Light then gave birth to Protectors of the Seal, the Parmans, the Motabians, and the Dezolians, on the three planets, and warned them all that the seal would weaken about every 1,000 years.

Tsu = Grantz? That would confuse the hell out of me. I'd be trying to cast protective spells on people and accidentally shooting lasers through them.

I'm sure by "grantz" he means literally "gurantsu", "tsu" being the final syllable. That wouldn't make it any less confusing to us, but there you can see the origin of the "tsu" technique.

Wrong thread? :) Grants is an attack Technique in PSO too, by the way.

Rune Lai is a female, who gave the katakana, and someone else of unspecified gender put them in English. Just saying. :)
