are they randomised and is there a list of them? i only just noticed that whenever you looked at bookshelves in the school in Krup (i think it works in the esper mansion as well, i'm not sure) and went out again, the titles are different.

also, some of the references i don't get. what the hell is a bare queen? what is a spoiled rabbit of the prairies? (i'm assuming its a PS2 zombie rabbit, hence the spiders and ants in the other books.).

Never noticed it and I've never seen it mentioned before.
Care to make a list of available titles and descriptions? Maybe it'll inspire some phanfiction! ^^

Actually, it works nearly everywhere there's book shelves. And, no, it's not randomized. It's usually specific to the area. For example, in the school in Piata Academy, they are all about Motavian history. Certain students throughout the game have specified books and parents have parenting books, etc.

That was one of the things that made me love the game all the more was the little details. You can "find" cool stuff in cabinets too, occastionally when Chaz doesn't have a fit about "opening" them. Like a gamegear in one of the inns.
