Why not Phantasy Star?

Hey, Benoit...I am NOT Mike Ripplinger. PSO sucked. A new part of the story is fine, but when it has NOTHING at all in common with the other games, then it is worthless. No one complained when PSIV created a whole new planet, did they? Few complained even about PSIII, which even though happened about 1,000 years after leaving Algo, still tied itself into the story. But everyone that complains about PSO has a valid reason- It isn't a Phantasy Star game! You could have it take place on Pluto, but if it fits the story, then it is a PS game. PSO didn't fit what was created by the original PS's. What happened to the Motavians and Dezolisians that were so dominant in PSI, PSII, and PSIV? What the hell is a HUnewearl? Where does all of this new stuff come from? The answer: another game. It has little in the way of a story. Yes, I read the script, all 574kb thank you very much, and it still made no sense. I realize that all of the original PS games were like that as well, but at least there was a valid reason for it--it made the story. PSO is just a "how much can you kill?" deal, as are all MMORPG.
[Edit by Gipper on [TIME]1109358992[/TIME]]

Here's an example of why a complete change of storyline consistencies in video game series is not necessarily a bad thing:
Remember Shining the Holy Ark & Shining Force 3? These two titles have nothing to do with the rest of the Shining series storywise yet they are still labeled as Shining games. Do you know why? It's because that these two games borrowed elements from the previous titles that made the Shining series great, regardless if they don't follow in the same time continuity as the other games (screw Shining Soul's connection).
Jamesfnquinn, I now respect your opinion in regards to your hatred of PSO because at least you explained to me that you gave PSO a chance -- online and offline -- and it still didn't satisfy you. I mistook you for some purist, and for that I hope you can accept my apology for insulting you. Sorry that this reply is late.

[Edit by ThePeaGuy on [TIME]1115902955[/TIME]]

This is not about opinion at all. I'm argueing against you because you guys can't seem to grasp that Phantasy Star doesn't have to be in Algol to be Phantasy Star.
Phantasy Star was about much more than Algol.
Yet you people just dismiss the game because you can't get over Algol, a story which has been closed. Starting a new arc will still defeat PSIV's purpose, because then it wouldn't be the end of the series and all the darkness.
Instead, PSO doesn't break our Algol and creates something new. Yet people still aren't satisfied. It's as childish as saying that the 3D Sonic Adventure games suck because "OMG its nott liek the originalzzz!!!!!!!!!!!111".
If you can't grasp that, I feel sorry for you. Your loss.
[Edit by Benoit on [TIME]1109608642[/TIME]]

Funny...I thought only Motavia, Dezolis, Rykros, Zelan, Kuran, and the Asteroid Belt revolved around Algo.

Phantasy Star is about the mix of sci-fi with medieval, a dark story that you can interpret, lovable characters, and things like genetic manipulation, and similar things.

Plain and simple, PSO is a new chapter in the Phantasy Star series....it takes place in a new area, and has a new style of gameplay....I dont recall many people crying when Super Mario Sunshine wasnt a side scrolling acid trip.....
Phantasy Star Online, was the FIRST 3d ONLINE GAME. Give it some credit, Sega took some risks, and some innovations to make the game. They pulled it off decently because now you can experience a phantasy star-esque game WITH friends, and explore / interact w/ other fans. I think you ALL missed that detail lol.....
PS has always been a Space Opera/bio/cyberpunk sort of deal. Theres been all sorts of settings for the games, PS1 was a mix of space/medieval, and then you get 2 which was hardcore Sci-Fi, 3 took a trip into medieval (and reminded me alot of Arislan), and then 4 took a mix of alot of things........now you have Phantasy Star Online, beautifully designed space station town, .....and very nice dungeons, on another planet.......sure its not algol oh no, were not going to die. Maybe it IS in Algol and we dont know it? ....the story was sort of weak, but that was because it isnt linear....you really had to talk to everyone, it sort of borrows from WAY older RPG's, especially Ultima. You need to talk to alot of people to understand the game more......but even if you dont, its still a fun game to experience......dont feel betrayed...feel relieved, that PS was able to take a jump toa new level of gaming.....
Sega still managed to pull of a nice RPG with it....remember it was the groundbreaker....
On another note, Benoit are you brain damaged ? I recall you saying something about we should use a little effort to understand a story......sorry ace, if you think enjoying a story = work, youre a moron no if's ands or buts.
On another note, the reason FF has such widespread success is this magazine called Nintendo Power, and this other thing called stupid-as-all-hell-fanboys. My highschool is crawling with wannabe gamers that jumped onto the RPG band wagon w/ FFVII and think its superb........I tell them to check out Ultima, and they think im talking aobut the spell in FF....when im really talking about an RPG series with one of the greatest stories ever created.....fanboys are everywhere, and they're lazy, and like pretty images. FF is beautiful to look at, the art is excellent.....and they like to stare, so theyll keep playing games like FFX, where the radar tells you where to walk....wtf yknow?....
FF took a plunge right after VII. VII was excellent personally, mainly because i liked the way the technology and fantasy collided, and how it was such a big game to explore, there were alot of side things to do, and you have to give the game credit for spanning 3 discs, and having such an innovative battle system....ive yet to see a game recreate the sweetness of the materia system....Junctioning = ....quirky, and then theres FF9 where you equip stuff to learn stuff...dumb..........and I wont get into sphere systems......not even worth the typing.

The difference, and a large one, is that none of the Final Fantasy (almost spelled that with a ph LOL) games had any connection whatsoever, it's just a collection of games that are sort of similar and go by the same name. PS on the other hand, is a gmae that is nice and sequenced, PS, PSII, PSIV (PSIII is kind of a sidetrack, but hey, whatever). The story was complete after PSIV, and no one really had to do anything after that. Sure, there are some loose ends to tie up, but a game that really was nothing more than a bunch of dungeons and glibbering idiots yapping online about HUnewearls or whatever they are is not Phantasy Star. There are no real references to Algo, no Motavians or Dezolisians, nothing that made Phantasy Star great. It doesn't even build on the story of the first four PS's, it is a whole new story. I'm not saying that in and of itself it is a bad game, by MMORPG standards, it is pretty good. But it is NOT Phantasy Star.
