Don't worry, you're not a poser if you're willing to find out...some people just say the old PS is stupid and write it off. I think that I will explain only PS1 because of time...and I'm tired...
It all starts on Palm in the star system of Algol, in space century 342 (accordind to the PSC manual). Life is hard under the oppressive rule of Lassic, the king of Algol. It wasn't always this way, though. Lassic was once a good king, and good to his people...until one day, the leader of a cult appeared and offered immortality to all who joined. Lassic, getting on in his years, was captivated by this idea. Soon, the atmosphere of Algol began to change...Lassic became cruel, and with the help of his robotcops, quickly crushed the free spirited people of Algol. NOTE: The Japanese manual states that Lassic went searching for power and became corrupted by what he found and started wearing dark armor and became cruel...while the original US version states that this evil power (the name of which you may have already guessed) seeked out him...but to continue on...
But not all were crushed by the Robotcops...in particular, a man named Nero. When the game starts, you find Nero (as the main character, Alis) dying from a wound that the Robotcops have inflicted on him. His last wish is for his sister to free Algol from Lassic's grasp...which is were the adventure begins.
I won't put anymore because I don't want to ruin the story for you or anyone who might read this. I encourage you to play all the PS games, not just PSO.
http://www.phantasy-star.net should have a basic explanation of all the stories...but I may be wrong. The best way to find out is by playing them.

Er...you may choose to emulate the game, because a SMS is somewhat hard to find these days...
PSI-Sega Master System
PSII (points downward)
PSIII-Sega Genesis
PSIV(points upward)
PS Collection---Sega Saturn (Japanese)*
PS Collection---Game Boy Advance, but it only features PSI,PSII and PSIII
PS Adventure---Sega Game Gear (Japanese)
PS Gaiden---Sega Game Gear* (Japanese)
*means I'm not sure about the latter
The GBA-collection is a nice introduction at a fairly reasonable price. If I were you I'd go for that one, although emulation is free ;)

For a lower PC, get Genesyst. It used to be the best emu for me when I was on Pentium I. Then download the roms (the software on the cartridges compressed in one file) and load them on your emulator. You can get emulators and roms all over the web.

Hmm. I have the Ages emulator. Simple, no frills, no cheat code enabler (thank God, if you play honestly like me, you'll want to avoid cheat code enablers at all cost. Sometimes you don't know that they're on!!!). It really works for me. :)

Since this is a Phantasy Star site, we should be promoting the idea of buying the game, not pirating it...

Go for PS Collection (GBA)! It is a good little cartridge for people who need an introduction to the series...and it's cheap to boot! I picked mine up a couple weeks after launch for $39.99 (Canadian)...so think of how cheap it'll be now!
If you need PS IV, then it may be alright to emulate it if you can't find it...people selling it on Ebay charge a small fortune.

Oh, that's right. But if the game is no longer produced (I've only ever emulated 1 game and that was PSIV because no one would charge half decent prices on E-bay) then it's okay to emulate. However, since PS 1-3 are quite easy to obtain, BUY THEM!
Just so you know Neo, I bought PS Collection for GBA, and I recommend you do so as well. Then you never have to worry about quality and it's supporting your favorite series.
Benoit... while I agree that we should support Phantasy Star....this Phantasy Star site provides ROMS for emulators. ;)
