PSU linking to the old games

Postby Cherok » Sat Mar 22, 2008 5:06 pm

I heard mention in the PSU previews that elements of the storyline would reference the classi4 titles from the Genesis. ANy truth to that? Are there actually story references or just new places that are given the same names (IE Rykros) as places in the old game.

Just item names (Neiclaw, Falclaw) and planetary parallels (Parum=Parm/Palma, grassy robo-planet, a space station smashes into it at one point; Neudaiz=New Dezoris, water-elemental theme; Moatoob=Motavia, desert theme).

And Rykros, which is obviously the best place for Dark Falz to live. I mean, we all remember that Rykros was an evil planet filled with darkness and totally not with the servants of the Great Light. That, or ST never played the old games, saw that Rykros was the last planet in the music list or something, and figured that's probably where the last boss was or something.

There are Newmans, but, they tend to suck at anything that isn't your typical Mage-class activity. CASTs tend to lean more towards your PSO style of chunky, stupidly-helmeted gunner types rather than the sleek, human-faced, artillery-based Wren types, though it's easy to recreate Wren-types anyways. Beasts are a new creation entirely, but I suppose if anything they're comparable to Motavians, since they do have the ability to turn big and hairy. Humans, despite most of the classic heroes being of the species, are pretty average/bad at everything. They seem to hit half as hard as beasts, have half the accuracy of robots, and have half the magic of newmans.

Foi is Foie, simple enough. Wat is Barta, for whatever reason. Gires is Resta, Rever (Was that the revive spell?) and Nares are combined into Giresta, and Megid is now wimpy dark magic, albeit it has an instant kill chance.

Slicers don't come back when shot. Incidentally, they're also never let go of when used.

There's probably more, but I can't think of much at the moment.

Barta is the correct translation of the ice Technique. Notice that PSO also uses it.
Gires is Resta

No, Res is Resta.

Okay, so on the ice thing I guess I can't complain too much. Wat was so much easier to associate mentally, though, on account of Barta meaning nothing in my mind, and Wat being short for Water.

But, Gires is a 'cure everyone' spell, which Resta in PSU is, so, I stick by that one.

Who was it that hasn't played the games to get things right? :P

The only time Gires was a 'cure everyone' spell was in PSIII. If you're referring to references to PSIV, that would be 'Sar'.

Admittedly, they've never really been consistent in the games with what technique does what. In PSIII, Tsu was a water/ice element attack, but in IV Tsu was light energy (I think?) while wat took the place of water/ice. It seems the only one that's stayed true was foi/foie, and the only time that was different was in the original, but that's only because of the translators at the time.

PSU is a different universe. The fact that descriptions of the Neiclaw say it came from a dimensional rift (something to that extent) would suggest so, anyway.

....GAAAH! The last one I played was PS3, unfortunately, so it's got me all out of whack. Well, er....still, PSU is madness. MADNESS!

So true. It's just the same as including a Chocobo in every Final Fantasy, though that, I believe has been accomplished without sacrificing the ongoing charm of the big yellow bird.( That is until he got his own mysterious dungeon game, the whore)

I wish... Oh I wish that those who were leading story planning would have put a bit more effort into making the continuity of the new game fit into, or even compliment the old titles.

For the love of god, appease this fan!

In addition to what Thanatos said, I have to say that I was speaking translation-wise. If they had meant Gires, it would have been Giresta. In PSO, the few levels of Resta only healed yourself, and at higher levels it did everyone in a range. I guess PSU follows up on that.
In PSIII, Tsu was a water/ice element attack, but in IV Tsu was light energy (I think?) while wat took the place of water/ice.

In PSII, the Tsu series of Techniques were lightning-based.

Please, no. Phantasy Star is a finished series. Let it rest (except maybe for side games without Dark Force).

PSU is the game where they can't even get the names consistent between *versions*, let alone with the old games - Comparison of JP version tech names and US version tech names, JP on left, US on right:

Agtal - Shifta
Defbal - Deband
Zodial - Same
Retial - Retier
Agdeel - Jellen
Defdeel - Zalure
Zodeel - Same
Resta - Same
Gi Resta - Giresta
Regene - Reverser (Er... If they're changing the name entirely anyway, why not use, you know, Anti?)
The attack ones stay more or less the same, only differences are like with Giresta - Dam Barta instead of Dambarta. ダム・バータ if you wanna be picky. :P

The US translations are pretty faithful to the original Japanese Technique names of the classic series, though.

Oh come on, Beniot! There's still room for updates!

Just plan the story around it being years and years in the future or past, and don't make it so epic. I'd love to see some of the individual stories of people living within the Algo system that didn't have to 'save the universe'.

Get this: Shenmue meets Parasite Eve... All based in on Motabia just as it's being colonized by Parmans.

There's no saying that it has to follow the traditional epic-ness of a bunch of kids saving a world of guns by swinging their swords around. Smaller scale

Can everyone agree though that the 'typical' RPG where some kid is the chosen one, fights an age old evil on behalf of the power of light and saves the universe a storyline that has far outlived itself?

Goddammit, I hate this ongoing story. Get fucking original.

I think loathing for this theme should have its own thread :D

I couldn't agree more on that.

That's the very reason I didn't like tales of symphonia, and that's one of the reason I don't like Ethan's Staff

Considering that's the basic PS plotline, how would YOU create a different basic plotline while keeping the whole 'PS' feel to it?
