I don't usually download them on a dial-up connection, so next time I'm on public access...

Opinions about the PSU trailer..

Postby Josiah Tobin » Mon Jan 31, 2005 8:00 pm

Hmm... Hmm.
I dunno. No matter WHAT they say, no developer nowadays can REALLY make a new game in an old series like the old ones. It just seems to be impossible for some reason.
This looks to be nothing like the old games in any department... Yeah, so bug me about being a purist, but if they can't make it like Phantasy Star they either shouldn't make it at all or not call it a Phantasy Star game.
It's just that every time a new PS game is released or announced I know that it's technically part of the whole storyline, and that completely ruins whatever speculation/mystery I had with the old games, knowing this new game would 'happen' eventually and ruin the feel of the series.
Seems like all modern rpgs are so... flavourless, anyone know what I mean?
For one thing, sure the music's high quality and everything, but it's just not MEMORABLE. After just watching the PSU trailer I can't remember the music that was playing at all. It's just all so generic.
The main thing that's bugging me is the inclusion of all these vast cities and metropolises that Phantasy Star was never about... Look back on the first four games, there were no huge sprawling cities... Just small to medium-sized towns with a kind of sci-fi feel to them.
For some reason this game reminds me of FFX (and I haven't even played that game much at all... I don't even have a ps2 or any modern console :p), and that's not good...
When did rpgs become so bland, boring, and simmilar to eachother?
If they're trying to make this like the old games, I'm almost certain just from that trailer that they're going to fail in that aspect.
What happened to the good old Phantasy Star logo? You all know the one, the stylish spikey yellow one used in the first four games. The 'new' logo is just plain drab and boring. (did anyone else see "Phantasy Star Puniverse" just because of the way the 'p' extends down like that? :D )
Okay... Rant over... Sorry about all that. But I now firmly believe that no 'big' professional developer can make an rpg with any personality, style, or character like any of the old 16-bit rpgs.
Now, this last comment will probably either amuse/annoy/piss off some people, but personally I think 2d was the way to go for rpgs. Just simple overhead 2d.
Of course that may just be me being biased, but as a pixel artist (and having some knowledge of game design) I think that you can put much more... style? feeling? character? I don't know the word-- into a sprite than an overly complex, flashy, 3d model.
Okay, seriously this time-- I'm finished ranting, heh.
EDIT: One more thing. Not every game has to be online... If there's one (more) thing I absolutely detest, it's that every RPG coming out nowadays is online. The gaming 'giants' today are just... bloody... clueless.
[Edit by Josiah Tobin on [TIME]1107201866[/TIME]]

You, sir, need to play Skies of Arcadia and Tales of Symphonia.
Those games definitely have style and stand out.

As it stands, though, no such luck...

So... you only have a Genesis/Mega Drive, yet make a stance about all modern RPGs being so-so? o_O
I hope for you that you can give a good explanation to that.

Hmm... Honestly, no, I can't, apart from saying I've played many modern rpgs and they just didn't grab me-- And the ones I played through, or at least a decent way through, just felt bland. It's just how I feel, and no, I don't think I can offer any 'proof'-- Just my crazy opinion. :)
EDIT: I guess I should say that there are a couple reasons apart from opinion. One has to do with the graphics/controls... I just don't much like the way most modern/relatively modern rpgs are either pseudo-overhead or survival-horror style fixed camera angles. As stated earlier, I just by far prefer the straight overhead 2d style of the 'old' rpgs. Personal preference.
Another thing... character design... There seems to be a general 'style' for character design in modern rpgs. Often it looks rather... silly... Some (Note: I didn't say 'all'... but there's often at least one character who is just... weird :p) characters wearing things like (as a general example) brightly colored jester hats, elaborate primary-colored/pink costumes, just strange and very... I dunno... Well, it seems like a kind of fantasy Japanese pop culture thing but in rpgs. Something like that. Hard to describe, so I won't bother at the moment...
I realize there are plenty of people who enjoy modern rpgs and have no problem with them.
But me, well, I honestly don't like the style and direction they're going in nowadays, especially since most, if not all, are showing some signs of following this.
Now, Benoit, this is just my opinion, and clearly I've had my rant already and won't be angrily blurting what I believe anymore... So rest assured I don't want to start an argument. :p
[Edit by Josiah Tobin on [TIME]1107209979[/TIME]]

I saw the trailer and practically wet myself! Finally , a sci-fi RPG that isn't going to be horrible...*cough* Xenosaga *cough*. granted, its just a remake of 2... >_<
Anyone know the news on PSU? www.phantasystaruniverse.com
That game looks swank.
We need more space opera RPGs, and this game should finally remedy that.

[Edit by Arkhan on [TIME]1107282374[/TIME]]

hello, I don't post much message, but I often come to see this wonderfull site in order to gather information from my favorite serie over all.
I would have to say that I mostly agree with Josiah Tobin's point of view.though I do think their are some fabulous 3D RPG.
I'll just tell one of those things bugging me about for example Sky of Arcadia: characters' age 14, 15, 16. It makes the whole thing rather non-grown-up to me (I don't wan't to say another word for non-grown-up as it could be taken rather pejorativly, It wouldn't be my goal)
it's like the whole team of FF8... everyone sixteen...
it's about the same thing for Tales of symphonia (a game I love for its game play but...) They behave like children, for example excuse me for the spoiler but when Colette is changing in order to save the world... The only thing Lloyd (the hero) is to think about is "if to save the world Colette has to change, I'd rather not save the world"... I like many aspects of this game but when I play a game I don't want to be reminded every 5 minutes that I should be good with other people, everybody is the same no matter their race elf half-elf human... (it's too obvious what it stands for).
Modern RPG are about modern problems of teenagers and especialy japanese teenagers. There is no doubt in that when you see a game like FFX even just looking by the character design.
I am so sorry to not answer the topic, My answer would be: I am not turned on by this trailer, It feels far from the PS serie I used to know (no motavian, nor dezorian). If it's an Online RPG (again) there'll be probably a bunch of nei-like character without any reason to exist but to do some fan service as, as far as I know Nei never had children and rika just by herself wouldn't be able to be the begining of a whole new race (the bio lab being destroyed, it's most likely that Rika was unique and the only one and the last of her own).
It's a FMV but whereas they could create what ever they dreamed of, the fights we see here are rather sad and slow and everything is made upside down, to lot of my Ps fan and cinema fan friends and me in this video camera shots do have bad angles, it gives the video a low quality.
I think PSU can be a good game fun to play like PSO is a good game (If it was a real bad game I wouldn't have played it for so long) but I hope it will be linked to the old PS serie unlike PSO. I'll wait until I know more about it to tell how great or how bad this game is.
So far, I'll just say like Ultema: I am skeptic

What really scares the living shit out of me is in the opening even in the background it mentions things we are wondering, Phantasy Star V? Phantasy Start Online 2?
Once I saw that I really almost fell out of my chair, now I'm not saying this is a bad thing but just saying that makes it seem like they're going to A. Try and mix the two togeather (oh dear god what have they done) or B. Make a completely new series not related to either PSO or PS. (I wont mind that much).
AS for the character designs like the rest of you they just don't look like characters in PS, We see humans, we see weird elf people (dear god if those are newmens someone kill the game now)a horned girl (as people have said it kills the whole Rika/Raja joke and doesn't make it funny anymore ;_;) and the hero looks like hes 12, now I like teenage heros, Teens do mostly have the most interesting parts of life, problems, resisting between child and adult, ect. Thats what make teens so apealing as character (not to mention that the majority of gamers today are teens or young adults)
I have mixed oppions about this but this seems to be just like what they did to the SF series, Once we herd of Neo we were all happy but it wasn't what anyone wanted at all, it went from a tactics game to an action RPG and they still had the nerve to call it "force" Sega is sinking fast as it is, they killed the best SRPG series they had already, god don't let them do it to the best RPG series of all time (PSO was bad enough >.>)

Umm....It hasn't been brought up really...
But you mentioned the "hero". Sorry for being obvious...but he looks exactly like a HUmar
Also..the "Newmans" to be honest..I think look cool, both the female in the air ship, and what people seem to think is a HUnewm.
And, I must say...that was a FOmarl using Gibarta...if you can't see that, your blind!
Ah yes, and the HUcast. He seemed to be using something that resemble Black King Bar.
Hope I haven't made anyone feel bad. :D

Sounds to me like someone is seeing only what he wants to see...
First flaw: nearly anything can look like a HUmar. Doesn't take a lot.

And, I must say...that was a FOmarl using Gibarta...if you can't see that, your blind!

What really defines a FOmarl? A female Force. What's a Force? A technique user, of course. So, it looks like a female technique user casting Gibarta... this can easily apply to the original PS.

Ah yes, and the HUcast. He seemed to be using something that resemble Black King Bar.

You assume it's a HUcast. Sorry, but that could purely be an android using a black staff. You're putting a lot of stock in very little actual evidence... just because the title has "PS" in it, and you see an android, that doesn't make the android a HUcast.
Eh, that's not going to fly. There's simply not enough similarities to call it a successor to either PS or PSO.

[Edit by LaconianShot on [TIME]1107809323[/TIME]]
