I noticed from observation that generally, the story is first posted briefly exactly as written (assuming the tags didn't contain overt errors or were omitted), then later (usually between 1 day and 3 weeks), HTML-level changes are typically performed silently (an example being the <code> tag being replaced with <dl class="console"> in Hacking), and grammar/spelling level errors usually result in a PM from Benoit as the change occurs (my inbox is full of these examples)- this is the point where I accept or contest the change(s). Indeed, I've glanced through some of my older works and found such issues with thoughts becoming spoken, and one or two intentional errors getting corrected. I've pointed out most of these right when they happen via PM, but yeah, I'm gonna have to get around to scanning my works again when I have a free moment as well (I luckily still have copies of my pre-release code to compare against the online source, so it won't be hard for me). I do agree, a more permission-based proofreading process would be nice, although I'm quite happy that there is someone out there to catch the errors I miss- I think Benoit found in the ballpark of around 100 mistakes with Dark Energy when he read it, without once complaining of my downright shoddy writing skills.
I can't really argue against the author's right to be privy to changes before they're implemented, no matter how I look at it, to be honest.
