Overview
In 1998, Sega of Japan released a collection of all four of the original Phantasy Star games for
the Sega Saturn. Unfortunately, this disc was never released for the Americas or Europe. But now,
after the success of Phantasy Star Online (2001), the series has gained newfound popularity as new
fans have joined an already huge cult following. THQ, in an effort to capitalize on this popularity,
signed a licensing agreement with Sega that allowed them to bring the Sega classics to the GameBoy
Advance. THQ chose to include only the first three games in the series in their Phantasy Star
Collection cartridge; this is likely due to a lack of storage space for PS4, the most popular game of
the series. The compilation was released in the U.S. on November 25th, 2002, and was
released in Europe, under the name Phantasy Star Chronicles, on March 7th, 2003.
In porting the games to the GBA platform, THQ made a few minor changes. First, of course, is
the new title screen. Second, a small handful of grammatical errors were fixed, such as when
the governor calls Noah a "she" in PS1. A third unfortunate change is that a save bug
has been introduced in PS1: the game will occasionally crash while saving. The crash seems to
occur most frequently when saving at the same time that the music loops back to its starting
point; you should save frequently to minimize the potential gameplay damage. The bug may also refuse to manifest
depending on the hardware you use to play the game.
You can find walkthroughs, maps, screenshots, item and magic guides, and other resources for each
game in the game specific sections of this site.
