The dissappointment in PSIII

Discuss anything related to the Phantasy Star series

PS3 was sorta boring... it's the only one I had to really struggle to beat... not from diffuiculty, but because it was not all that good! It was different, yes, but for some reason, it was TOO different. Barely any futuristic stuff, like the series has down until PS3. Luckily, all this is fixed in PS4.
I wonder what people will see in the final days?

I could put it this way: PS3 is great game, but the battle engine (I incluce battle musics in it) is total bummer (Ha! I just HAD to say that.). Only if it had same kind of battle engine like in PSII or PSVI...
Anyway. Imo, for overall it's a good game.

Apart from introducing rows and columns on the monster side, the battle engine, mechanically, was exactly like PSII. Save for the "one turn" function they added.
Get Xenoblade Chronicles!

Somehow it just wasn't that nice.
Oh well... It just may be that It was so long time ago since I last played it. I just finished PSII... Maybe I'll move forward. :)

I didn't like PSIII a whole lot when I first started playing it, and honestly, it does have a lot more obvious weaknesses than the other classic Phantasy Star games, in my opinion. I think the thing that got on my nerves the most was the battle system. I hated the little icons, and I never ever used techs. I did like the music, and the plot, and overall, I didn't end up disliking it. Just more of an indifference.

I think I started liking it a lot better after I got Toyo Ozaki's PSIII character book. :P

The techs were way too weak to be considered useful... even the healing spells were watered down, and you'd have to use them CONSTANTLY, especially anti, what with the monsters spamming on poison.

I got Mieu's GiRes working pretty well when I balanced all the power into GiRes. :)

I guess I need to bring myself to play it since I am a PS phan. Last I played, I think I got as far as getting the boat. (Been YEARS!) Only thing I know of the game is what I see from PS sites. I tried playing the ROM not too long, but broke out of the prison with Rhys, saved, and quit. =P

I remember years ago my brother playing it on our old Genesis. I just remember him having Wren and not a full party. Could be mistaken. I was only about nine or ten. =)

I need to play PSIII again.
Then I could tell more precisely what I like and what I don't like about it.

It does have some good replay value, I'll admit, with the SEVERAL selectable protagonists and slightly varying endings and stor paths.

PSIII had its' moments. The music was wonderful, and the concept of your choices in the past affecting the progress of the game really was special.

However, the graphics, the speed, battles, were all a bit of a letdown. I had played PSII and IV before this, so I was immensely disappointed.

If there was a PS game that needed a remake it was III. I think Orakio of the Domes had been working on one at some point. Too bad those fan games rarely get completed.

One thing I left out in my game review that bothered me is all of the characters look beefed up on steroids. I half-expected Rhys to go Chuck Norris int he cell and break it apart... it LOOKED like he had the muscle, after all. And if you look really close, you'll see that Mieu's... assets flop from side to side TOO MUCH when she's walking.

But seriously. The graphics on PSIII are quite good.

And yes. I also would have liked if characters could have moved a bit faster.

And lower the random encoutner rate! I ran into Dryads every three steps in Cille.
