Saying hello...

Postby carlsojos » Tue Nov 30, 2010 11:46 pm

I've been crawling around this site almost daily for over a month, so I finally decided to register. My chosen screen name is carlsojos out of simplicity, but those who insist on a proper name may call me Mr. Anonymous (the ladies love a mystery man, right?) :)

Anyway, I've played with a computer in almost any way imaginable, and I've always been a bit of a fan of older games. My first RPG was Phantasy Star IV, which both my mother and I played until I wore out both a Genesis and a Genesis 3. My other primary hobby involves driving my $50 car around a racetrack, but I'm temporarily retired due to a really expensive part breaking.

About a month ago, I was jolted out of a sound sleep with a mysterious compulsion to write a fanfic, so I've been working on that for a while (My computer log reports that I began typing at 1:15:15 AM, Oct. 11). I hope to be able to post the first 150-200 pages by New Year's Eve, but I make no promises. I predict extreme hatred towards me, as I used a total 1.5 characters from the classic games (the half character is because I think that evading the reality of death can do strange things to an android's sense of logic). It was originally written as a game script, but I changed to a narrative out of my unadulterated hatred for vaporware.

For the fridge, I present a couple 4 packs of Sprecher Root Beer. Don't drink it too fast, cause that stuff's like $3.50 a pack, but it's got quite a beautiful flavor to it, with a slight undertone of honey. No alcohol in it, though.

Welcome to the board. Your admitting to lurking kinda scares me, as I don't know if people actually read the senseless stuff we (especially me) post. But hey, no harm nor offense taken.

Glad you decided to register and post. It'd be cool if more lurkers would do the same.

Welcome! Glad to see you stocked the fridge already. :) I'm no beer drinker, though.

Your mom played video games? She must be really cool!

I was mostly lurking simply to read the Compendium on the main site, but it was interesting to notice the debates on whether there would be a Phantasy Star V. I apply the Law of Conservation of Energy in an unorthodox way to justify my fic. The thing that surprised me the most on this site, was when I downloaded that Nei's Adventure thing earlier today and popped it in the emulator. I notice a stark similarity between her beginnings and the childhood of one of the characters I made. Almost makes me want to rewrite it, but since that would significantly change the psychological profile of the character, I'd have to go through my entire writings to determine what else changed. I'm using a lot of Chaos Theory to generate plot.

Why do I admit to lurking? I have zero training in forum etiquette, beyond the actual rules. I don't even know what a flame is. I thought it's the chemical release of heat, light, carbon dioxide, and other gases and residues from a carbon-based material in an oxygen-rich atmosphere, with variations depending on the impurities present and amount of heat introduced.

Meh, no need to worry. Not stepping on people's toes without reason is more than enough for forum etiquette.

Just discuss whatever you want and you're all set.

So as long as I don't step on anybodies toes, it's okay for me to set anything on fire? I'm starting to like this place already. I'm currently percolating a question about the Great Light, but I think I'll start playing PS II first, to see if my mind divulges an answer to pour into my cup, first.

As long as you don't burn someone's panties while wearing them on your head, we're all cool...

I really want to see that now. What?

Welcome to the forums! Nice to meet another fanfic writer. I also got this weird urge to write fanfic one day earlier this year, and now I'm up to... uuh... 13 PSII stories? I forget. Nothing novel length, mind you, but it's funny how the urge to write can sneak up like that, huh?

Indeed, the fanfic came quite suddenly, but the strangest thing is that I've always had a severe disinclination to write. I've never done better than a C in any writing class, so I wonder if my helmet's bounced off the roof one too many times. The big reason why my story's so long(46,600 words as I pick up my word processor once more), is that I am building without any plan whatsoever. I started with two characters. A descendant from Chaz, and a modified image of myself. For an eventual target, I treat emotion as energy, and pull a lost family card to start the journey for the first character. I reach a roadblock where one is no longer available, and the other is too mentally broken to continue.

To get around the block, I dragged the characters into a blank document and conducted a production meeting in the hopes of learning something that will bypass the problem. I get new insights into the support characters(I never realized the extent of one character's insecurity), but nothing came that I can use in the situation. After consulting my psychology book from college, I decide to convert to a narrative format, since I don't have the resources to make a game, anyway. I'm currently steaming back to the roadblock with a lot more ammo than before, but I think I might use the blockage to split the story in half. Since time tends to heal all wounds of the mind, it might just stabilize the girl enough to slowly restart the quest. As I continue typing here, it continues to look better, since the Great Light failed to take into consideration the possibility of failure in the plan it just executed. It needs a new plan, no more hiding...

...I think you just gave me an idea! Not one story, but two! Brilliant! No, wait, let's switch the perspective to another character. But who...? I think I'll have to hit the block in my current version before I decide exactly what happens next.

An expensive part of you or the car?

I came back here a few weeks ago after replaying PSIV in a weekend when I had a bad cold and the fanfic writing bug bit me again. I haven't hit 150 pages yet, though. :P

I like changing perspectives in stories. It keeps things interesting and provides more opportunity to delve into individual characters.

If you want to get technical, it's actually 3 parts. Wheel bearings for the front left, front right, and back left are worn out. If they were to fail catastrophically, the entire wheel, along with the brakes and everything else bolted to it, falls off. It's more likely that the car will simply become undrivable, first. At $100 per corner plus labor, I can't pass inspection until I grow some serious cash either for repairs, or a faster car. On the plus side, I can literally claim that I've nearly driven the wheels off my car. Believe it or not, I still drive it daily. It just gets a little scary in turbulent airflow near trucks, since the bearings have so much play already.

The car's pretty old for how I drive(1995), but I'm still young yet. The only thing louder than the hole in my muffler is the spectators when I smoke the snot outta my cheap tires in the corners. :)

That's a good point, but my twisted mind isn't used to rapidly changing gears. I can think of a several candidates for the perspective, but I think I'll need to backtrack and change reality a bit. A rundown of the statuses of my current shortlist, in descending order of who I like the most:
Extreme depression caused by mental trauma and a really bad childhood
Dead
serious to a fault, just became Lutz
Owning a resort town far away, hated by the university's principal
In a resort town far away, hated by the local girls
Just rejoined the group after a hiatus, isn't up to speed yet
Android From PSIV, still reeling from passage of time (~1,100 years)
Dead Android, too strange for me
Hates traveling, loves drinking (I dislike alcoholics)

This is where I have to find something good to say about these people, but then I'd spoil the story. This is where I lose sleep wondering what happens next.

Nice to meet you too, Semix. I think I can probably be the over aged crazy guy who rambles on about things that don't even belong in the off-topic. 8)
